why is my crown victoria running rich?
i have a 2000 crown vic with the p71 police package. a few day ago the check engine light came on and when i took it the the shop to have him clear the code he told me it was running too rich. his diagnostics tool said system too rich in bank 1 and bank 2. the light came on again later and i went and got a code reader of my own and it said too rich bank 2. then today it said bank 1. im wondering if it could be one of 2 parts. the EGR valve and the EGR pressure switch. or both. i also thought it could be the mass air sensor. i hope its not that. mass air sensors can be expensive.
Sorry, but I think your MAF is bad. When they fail they usually fail to the "full rich" condition. This results in a rough idle & possibly stalling at idle. This fall back condition allows the car to be driven till serviced but not much more. The rich in bank 1 or 2 is a symptom, not the bottom line problem. The reason for the rich mix is likely the failed MAF operating in the fall back mode. If so there should be another trouble code in the system.
