I really want to avoid a filter if at all possible. Im looking more for a tool that will allow me change the color to desired chades of green in different places.
I'm going to assume that your subject character is on a separate layer in this solution. Your answer: Gradient map. It's under Image --> Adjustments ---> Gradient Map. All you have to do is make your own gradient, positioning the various shades of green in the spectrum, and tack pure black and white onto the opposing ends.
Play around with it a bit and you should be able to get the result you're aiming for.
