I found a really nice 2000 Subaru Outback Sedan Limited at a local used car dealer. Its got leather, heated seats, a sunroof, side airbags, ABS and of course AWD. I didn't expect I would fall in love with it when I test drove it, but I did. They're asking $4995, which is right in my price range, the only bad thing is that it has 144,000 miles on it. My parents are opposed to it because it has high mileage, but my step-mom has a 2000 Outback Wagon and it now has156k miles on it, so I know they last a long time. Is 144k miles is too much? Will it be a good car? Will it last 4 years and 60k more miles (with regular maintenance)?
I live in Northern VT and commute 80 miles to school three days a week, so I put a few miles on. But I want a safe, reliable car and one I don't have to worry about getting stuck on the Heights I go over on my way to school.
The vehicle you are looking at is an excellent choice if that's your budget range. You want to be sure to check the carfax and have a mechanic (the one that works on your moms car) look it over for major problems. It's a 2000 with 155k so it will have minor problems...what the mechanic should let you know is the likely of lasting the 4 years 60k miles as you're asking here. I am buy a 2000 Forester with 167k miles for my girlfriend this week. I have no worries about it lasting several years and another 150k miles with proper maintenance. You will also want to know if the timing belt has been replace and have the mechanic pay special attention to the head gaskets for leaks. If the timing belt has not been replace I strongly recommend having them pay for that or discount the car (but you need to make sure you have it done one way or the other).
