1999 (early) golf has check engine light?
i was putting some extra fuel from a 1 gal can into my golf when the plastic hose got stuck. i had to yank it out and it bent the anti-syphon spring loaded cover in the opening of the tank,when i started the car the next morning it had a check engine light on. my mechanic read the codes and said it was the smog pump had failed, i changed it with no help..i believe it is something to do with that bent "tab" cause it happened the very next morning..almost like a mass evap leak when the gas cap is off..any ideas??
Pump failed or system failure? Big difference! System failure can be caused by many different things. Dose the pump switch on when you start the car and run for a short time? I guess you hooked up the air lines to and from pump. You need to check the vacuum line going to the control valve. I have found a lot of cracked / broken vacuum lines. Just because the scan tool say's, "secondary air supply "doesn't mean the pump is bad. You need to inspect the whole system and if you don't understand it you will spend a lot of time and MONEY poking around in the dark. Could be as simple as a fuse or relay or cracked vacuum line.
