I once saw ball lightning, it was going pass my bedroom window right after a thunder storm had stopped. Two large globes of white light floating by. Once I was outside and there were clouds high in the sky. Lightning was moving along just below the clouds, branching out for miles. Happened for at least 1/2 hour. What was THAT kind of lightning? No rain, dry summer day and the sun was going down in the distance so the sunlight was under the bottom of the clouds. Lightning was very clear, big, lots of branches. Little thunder.
The "ball lightning" is exactly that. It's a rare phenomena that has very little research results associated with it.
The large branches are called "cloud-to-cloud" lightning, or CC. Basically it's just that, lightning that stays between clouds.
Since your lightning was high in the sky and in large branches it sounds like something called "anvil crawlers." They are so named because they are CC that spread out beneath the anvil of a storm (so high up) and appear to crawl. They often signal a dying storm. The storm was probably far enough away that you were only under the anvil and therefore not experience rain.
There is no such thing as "heat lightning." This is simply lightning that occurs so far away you can't hear the thunder. Usually anvil crawlers don't result in audible thunder. They are at least 30,000 feet in the sky, and higher with a more powerful thunderstorm.
