Engine backfire and miss - Dodge 318 CID in 86 Ram Pick up?
My father gave me his pickup after he quit driving it. The engine misfires and runs rough at idle. If more than just a slight acceleration is called for, it occasionally backfires via the carburetor. (2 barrell). He had not put much gasoline through it in the past several years so I put some Gum Out in the tank and have run it about 60 miles since. I also pulled all the plugs and they looked fine.
I have also noticed a slightly muffled popping sound that sounds like it is some sort of exhaust issue. The Service Engine light is on and my dad said I could just ignore that, so I have no idea how long he has been driving it with the light on.
I do not have much experience with exhaust emissions components, EGR valves, O2 sensors etc. and would like some help with diagnosing this engine. The truck only has 53,000 miles on it with a good solid body and box.

1 bought a dodge, and it popped and sneezed threw the crab, i thought it was the crab , went and got a different crab a the junk yard, there was no change,the book i read suggested that valves were at fault, so , the valve covers leaked anyway so i removed them and gave it a good look, and what i found was (1) of nuts on the top of the valves was missing , found it in the cover in thick build up oil sludge, screwed it back on , torqued it the same as all the others and started the motor and the problem was gone , installed new gaskets and oil change and drove it for 50k miles and sold it . this is a true story , i hope these is your problem, good luck !
