Is $800 too much to repair surface scratches on a car?
A few days ago while unloading off a BC ferry, the driver behind me collided into my rear-passenger quarter panel/bumper with his tire leaving thin surface scratches and a spider-web fracture in the paint (similar to a baseball hitting a glass window).
You can't really notice the scratches unless you get close to it or there's plenty of sunlight.
My boyfriend and I got a couple estimates, one being Craftsman Collision, and both were $800. Both shops recommended claiming it through ICBC; however, the driver doesn't seem hesitant about paying the total cost.
Does $800 sound unreasonable? It hasn't gotten down to the metal, and no paint has been chipped. The scratches are about 1" long and probably 1nm deep.
The surface scratches could probably buff out without any repainting or touching up.
But I'm concerned that the spider webbing is a cracking in either the clear coat or base coat. If that's the case then $800 might not be out of line.
It doesn't take much damage to run up an $800 bill.
