Hello! I have a Ranger 3.0L V6 with 145,000 miles that has a crack in one of the cylinder heads. Coolant has pushed through the crack and washed down in to a few of the cylinders. I am replacing both of the cylinder heads but I am wondering if I need to dive in to the bottom of the engine as well.
My thoughts are that the crankshaft and bearings are submerged in oil and should not have been affected by the coolant. But then there's this part of me that says spinning a main bearing really stinks.
Any mechanics have an opinion on if I need to pull the bottom of the engine off as well or can I focus on the top (new cylinder heads, water pump, timing set, etc) and not worry about the bearings and crankshaft?
Unless the coolant has mixed in the oil, you should be OK. Realize though that water (coolant) can not compress as a fuel/air mixture can. If there were enough coolant entry into the cylinders, there is the possibility of bent rods which will eventually lead to failure.
If this were my truck, I probably would just replace the heads, change the oil and go.
