Is a windscreen for a porsche boxster necessary?
Is it a safety issue if you do not have one? Rock deflection, etc? Or is it strictly for extra comfort?
Windscreen is the rear glass between the roll bars not windshield which is in the front
Windscreen, windshield, bonnet, boot, trunk, etc. -- all depends on where you are in the world. As regards running a Boxster without the rear glass shield: without a wind tunnel test, such as Porsche has done, it's pretty hard to know if it would slow the car down -- increase drag, or make it slipperier -- decrease drag.
Knowing Porsche, I'm betting removing it will increase drag (decrease your gas mileage driving the same speeds) and cause a lot of buffeting of passengers and rick rack in the car.
You've noticed that Porsche is VERY conscious of the coefficient of drag generated by their vehicles. Did you know that they wind tunnel test their convertible tops to 225 mph? That the difference in side mirror support designs between the 996 and the 997 911 models actually adds downforce to the rear of the cars by channeling the air flow around the cabin to better impact the tail spoiler?
I virtually always go with Porsche engineering. After market parts and ideas seldom are as good as the factory made it.
