Physics question?
A box is in the back of a pickup truck when the truck accelerates forward. What force accelerates the box? Under what circumstance could the box slide? In which direction?
My physics class has been stumped with this problem. could you give me an answer and maybe explain it to me.
Thank you so much
Inertia keeps the box from accelerating - it really, really wants to slide backwards out of the bed.
The only way to accelerate the box is through the friction between the (moving) truck bed and the points on the bottom of the box in contact with the bed.
If this fictive force is greater than the acceleration, then the box stays where it is. If not, it slides. Oh - and it slides in the direction opposite the direction of motion of the truck.
