4.7 liter V8 - Will turning it over with wrong timing damage anything?
Engine - 4.7 liter V8 engine in a Toyota Land Cruiser. Engine code is 2UZ-FE, and it is the non-variable valve timing version.
I have had rebuilt heads fitted, but my mechanic got the timing wrong when fitting them. He said he got the timing in reverse (whatever that means?). It took him awhile to realise it, and in the meantime he turned the engine over extensively using the starter motor.
I understand that this is an interference engine, i.e. the valves will come into contact with the pistons if the timing belt breaks, resulting in probable damage to the valves. I presume that at least some of the valves would also hit the pistons if the timing was way off. However, would damage result if the engine was only turned over and never started, or would there be enough "give" in the valve stems to avoid damage?
Would I be right in thinking that satisfactory compression would indicate that no damage has occurred?

Yes damage can occur if he used the starter motor and not just a breaker bar on the crankshaft, however if he rolled the motor over with the starter and the motor continued to crank the motor should be ok but timing can still be off and it not run right. due to the lack of power from the starter it would have rolled to a point of contact and stopped that is why u always roll a motor over by hand never by a starter motor. if he is ur mechanic and he got the timing wrong find a new mechanic. good compression would indicate good rings and head gasket seals but not necessarily good valve seats have him do a leak down test on each cylinder. cylinders should be within 15 to 20 % anything less than 80 is a bad head, valve, headgasket, rings, by listening to the engine as it leaks it will tell u where the problem is. bring each cylinder to top dead center using a air pressure regulator and a compression tester hose charge each cylinder to 100psi compressed air if the regulater reads less than 80 u have a problem.
