honda accord drive cycle?
I changed the battery on a 2002 Honda Accord. The emission test failed because the monitors catalyst, oxygen sensor, and egr system was not ready. How long and what drive cycle will reset these obd inspections?
If you don't have codes, and your fault monitors have "not set" yet you may still just have to drive the car to get it ready to pass. The same thing would happen to you if someone cleared the data with a scanner, even if there were no faults. The emissions data is not usually lost by changing the battery, but if it is dead enough, or dissconnected long enough, it may be possible. To reset all the emission data monitors to the "pass" state you will have to complete three full drive cycles. A drive cycle consists of starting a cold engine and letting it warm up in park or neutral. then you must drive it and accelerate to about 45 without pushing the gas farther than halfway, maintain a steady speed (45) for a few moments or what ever traffic allows,then let off the gas and let the car decelerate on it's own for a while, then stop. Get on a thruway and accelerate to 65, decell to 50, and back to 65, then 50 a few times without hitting the brake. By now the people behind you just want to run you off the road. Get off at the next exit. Drive around on some side streets for a while 10 minutes will usually do. Stop and let it idle for a minute a few times during this, but if it's an automatic leave it in gear as if you were waiting at a light. You have just completed one drive cycle. Now you have to do two more.
Some important things to remember;
1) It only counts as a new drive cycle if the engine is cold. Cold means the coolant sensor must be within 11 degrees of the air temp sensor... that will take several hours of cooling.
2) It will only test the evaporative emmisions system for a vapor leak if you have at least 3/4 of a tank of fuel, and therefore won't set or test the data monitor if it is too low.
The data monitors the state inspection computers check have three states: Pass, Fail, or Not set. They must all be on "Pass"!
I hope this sheds some light on OBDII emissions inspections for you.
