I'm a beginner and I'm working on a fireworks torch with MAPP gas, some of my beads turn out ok, but some seem to get burned, and yet... the glass rods are not very maleable, they don't seem hot enough to me... anyone out there know what I'm doing wrong? PLEASE HELP!!!
What I mean is that the glass is scorching. I'm working with COE 104 glass - Morretti, no specials, just regular opaque & transparent rods.
The glass is molten when I wind but I don't get all the way around no matter how long I leave the glass rod in the flame.
I am a Lampworker, and still work at home with my HotHead and MAPP gas. There are MANY factors at work here. First, and foremost, do you have proper ventilation and is your torch securely anchored? Is the flame adjusted correctly? What is the COE of the glass rods you are using? Are you using Morretti, Wasser, Sataki, etc??? What colors or specials if any are you using? Have you taken any classes in Lampworking?
What part of the flame are you working in? FW/HH torches burn at a lower temp than say Barracudas or any other Oxy/propane ones. It will take longer to get your gather to start your bead. Is your chair/seat high enough so that you are looking down on the flame as opposed to working up in it?
There are soooooo many things that could be a problem. I am not understanding what you mean by "some seem to get burned". What exactly do you mean "burned"? And what do you mean the rods are not very malleable? In order to properly wind the glass on the rod, it must be molten; holding it in the correct place in the flame, and winding away from you will assure this.
