I have a 95 Ford Explorer and the AC will blow but the air does not get cooler. Is this something I can fix?
Basically the air in the car still blows out of the vents, but it's the same temperature as outside. I have heard that there is a chance I can buy the freon to put in myself, but there is also the freon for later Ford's that you must be licensed to obtain.
Can anyone tell me what freon I need and how I can try and fix this before taking it to a shop?
You're in luck - your ford takes R134a.
Go to the auto parts store, and buy a can that comes with the filler device. These are usually blue tubes. The can only fits on the "trigger" side, and make sure you screw it in. You CANNOT unscrew the can once it's screwed in, you either use it or lose it, so don't do it until you're good and ready.
The other side of the tube connects to your AC system. You will find steel lines heading to and from your AC compressor. These have plastic caps over nipples somewhere on the lines. Take the caps off and try to fit the blue tube onto them. It only fits on ONE of the nipples.
Now turn the AC system on in the car, crank it up to full blast. (The car should be running, and warmed up). Turn the can UPSIDE DOWN and press the trigger. When you release the trigger is when you get a pressure reading - you want to fill the car up to the green zone. Because an AC system is a vapor condensation system, do NOT overfill the system or it will not work. It's better to underfill it than it is to overfill it.
