The 2.0 engine is the same one used in the Neon's, other optional engine was a 2.4 liter, which is now used in PT cruisers.
The 2.0 engines had some head gasket problems, but if it was going to have any problems with it, it should've happened a while ago and should have been replaced with the newer design gasket.
For fuel mileage, expect about 28 mpg for an automatic, and just over 30 for a manual trans. Of course, that can vary by driving conditions, and whether in town or highway driving.
Comfort is a personal thing. What's comfortable to one person can be totally annoying to another. With that said, I never had any problems with driving one, it was comfortable to me. Best thing for that is to take it for a drive and see how you feel in it.
Overall, I would say if you get one in good condition that has been taken care of, it would make a nice first car. Expect to pay anywhere from $2000 to $3000 for one in good shape.
