Okay so we just had the coldest day of the year in PA and I only had less than a quarter tank of gas in my car. It started up fine yesterday morning, and then it was off after five minutes of warming it up. It hasn't turned back on since, and I don't know what to do now. I thought my lines were frozen so I went out and bought HEET and DRY GAS and I put that in my tank, and it reached 28 degree's today and we thought that would be enough warmth to thaw out my gas lines, but I was told that it could be my fuel pump maybe?
It was running fine in perfect order since I bought it from my friend who had no problems with it prior. I mean I drove 20 mile previous to yesterday and there were NO signs of it running bad.
How can my 92 lumina Chevy Euro go from running perfectly one night to not starting at all? Does anyone know what I can do I'm open to all suggestions. Monies tight, and my car is my life line for work HELP!
The most common problem that I find with fuel injected engines is carbon built up. Carbon usually builds up in the throttlebody restricting the idle air. This condition is more present the colder the atmospheric temperature. I believe your lumina has a 3.1L v6 engine. The first thing I would do is a tap test. On the intake manifold, located on the left/drivers side ot he engine is the EGR valve, it sits on the corner of the intake closest to the brake master cylinder. It has 3 small electromagnets that open and close each valve. If a peice of carbon gets stuck under the valve it will cause a lean missfire and in some cases cause the engine not to start. Doing a tap test at the base of the EGR valve can knock that peice of carbon loose, closing the valve. This is a tap test, not a hammer test.
Another possible problem is in the idle air passage of the TB. This gets carbon build up and resticts the idle air flow, causing the fuel mixture to be rich. It is located on the TB, is black, about an inch in diameter, an inch deep, has an electrical plug-in, and has two T15 torx screws that attach it to the TB. This can be removed, cleaned with a throttlebody cleaner that is O2 sensor safe (about 10 bucks), and reinstalled. Thsi usually takes about an hour.
Most mechanics look for the obvious things that prevent and engine from starting, ie. Spark (ignition), fuel, and compression, but they over look that fuel actually means fuel/air mixture. This engine is also direct ignition, so there is no distributor cap and rotor.
