When driving a car like this down a highway with the wind blowing, is it normal to have a loose steering feel and "lane wander" when cruising above 65 mph? I checked for play in the steering and so far everything looks fine.
I have owned and driven many type 1 Volkswagen beetles starting with a 1958. I now own a 1961, 1972 and a 1975. As a retired mechanic I enjoy restoring these simple cars which at times can drive one crazy.
I can relate to the "loose steering feel" in certain cross winds it seems that they will sometimes change lanes without turning the steering wheel. Part of the problem is due to the light weight of the front end since the engine is in the rear. At 65 mph there is very little weight between the road and the footprint of your front tires, Keep in mind that the actual foot print of the front tires is equal to a man's size 9 shoe. The danger of losing control is magnified during wet or snow/ice conditions
I will list a few things which will improve handling.
1. Make sure that your tires are in good condition and are inflated correctly.
2. Make sure that the riding height is correct since this affects alignment.
3. Check and adjust front end alignment.
4. Drive defensively and learn to read your car's behaviour. In other words, over time you will learn what your car is capable of.
Finally, enjoy your car, the bug is amazing and seems to have a mind of its own.
